about

Formed in early 2013, Trick Mammoth are a Flower Cult pop band from Dunedin, New Zealand. 'Floristry' is their first and only album, released in February 2014.

Trick Mammoth have crafted a sound unintentionally sincere & bashfully honest, performed with soft indifference; saccharine sweet yet doused in death. Drawing mostly on film, literature and poetry, their music discharges a shy pretension buried under layers of simplicity.

“Trick Mammoth recall the similarly sunny bands of early-mid 80s – think Orange Juice or The Pastels…utterly charming. A quiet gem.” North & South magazine (NZ)

“…the songs on this debut LP ride forth on a rush of elegantly minimal melodic jangle that sometimes recalls Look Blue Go Purple. Even their faster songs sound gentle, intimate.” Sunday Star Times (NZ)

“Trick Mammoth go in search of the perfect feather-light pop song in this impressive 10-song debut… and come within a cast’s whisker of the sublime… the writing is strong and the overall dynamic enchanting.” Otago Daily Times

“one of those bands that burrows into your brain immediately upon first listen, due in part to infectious songs loaded with memorable hooks…The band’s particular brand of sweetly delivered, wistful pop carries a hint of melancholy to balance out the warmth. The resulting sound calls to mind such greats as Black Tambourine and The Go-Betweens crossed with a little Veronica Falls.” Perfect Midnight World (US)

“a kind of folk-rock which manages to be urgent yet bucolic, urban yet pastoral, psychedelic yet primitive… This music has grown up on the fringes of official history, in the undergrowth, where it’s blossomed into something truly gorgeous. And it’s this nonchalant rock music, …cool and simplified, which this young three-piece play” Les Inrockuptibles (France)

“What bands play upbeat songs that are touched by such sadness? What bands luxuriate in melancholy sweetness with such rich despondency? The Smiths and The Cure. Here's another: Trick Mammoth. Trick Mammoth belong to a lineage that includes Hatful of Hollow and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. They create the sort of literate, romantic pop music that was indie's high-water mark…”” Did Not Chart (UK)

“This is just about as perfect guitar-pop as you're likely to hear; lovely vocals, lovely sound, lovely song... just lovely.” Sound of Confusion (UK)

“Really fantastic stuff here…This is the sound of sunshine and springtime… The tunes are strong here - hooks a-plenty folks - …like the best bits of C86 mixed with stuff like Black Tambourine and Pam Berry's Glo-Worm.” A Pessimist is Never Disappointed (US)

“Floristry is a good record. A damn good one….the album has an intangible substance which comes either from the impeccable songwriting or from the ability to create sonic bliss from such simple building blocks.” Happy (Australia)

“the record is a real joy to listen to, all the tunes bear the hallmark of a talent which becomes increasingly established as the album progresses, from one song to the next. Trick Mammoth are setting the bar very, very, very high with this first album… NZ has found her new pop/rock standard bearers for 2014.” Black Box (France)

“All hail the new sound of Young Dunedin. I swear to god there is something magical in the air down there. Certainly something was fueling this impressive production line of insanely addictive, quirky off-kilter Pop… “ Unpopular (UK)

"Fast-paced, surprisingly accomplished indie guitar, with pop sensibilities and catchy tunes. A wonderfully full and evocative sound, with hints of Pavement, Elliot Smith, occasionally The Kinks... What’s more it is infused with the optimism of youth and will brighten any corner: a refreshing breeze blowing melancholy cobwebs away... this is an exceptional debut.” Incendiary Magazine (UK)

“classic Dunedin indie pop, from Dunedin… It’s lovely, it really is” Public Address (NZ)

“an effortless collection of sun drenched pop tunes” Under the Radar (NZ)

“I would liken their sound to the twee pop of Scottish bands Belle & Sebastian and The Pastels, rather than that of Camera Obscura. Their debut album is a flurry of ten bright and jangly pop tracks. There is such an innocence on the surface...but their lyrics hint at a darker edge to be found at a depth just below a scratch.” Music Insanity (US)
